Scirpus atrovirens, commonly known as Green Bulrush, is a sturdy perennial plant typically found in wetlands throughout North America. It grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet and flourishes in consistently wet soils. You can often find it in marshes, swamps, and along the banks of streams. Its dense, grass-like foliage provides a habitat for wildlife and helps stabilize the soil.
Green Bulrush prefers full sun to partial shade and is ideal for rain gardens, wet meadows, and riparian zones. Its inconspicuous brownish-green flowers bloom in late summer, and its fibrous roots help prevent erosion. While cold stratification is not typically required, the plant establishes well from seed.
Scirpus atrovirens is invaluable for wetland restoration and conservation efforts, playing a critical role in improving water quality and providing wildlife habitat
